Yes To ‘Old Money’ Fashion: Some History & Why We are Returning to This Classic Fashion Era

There has been an incredible new style flowing along side the more trendy “influencer” fashion these days. Beyond the more crazed haze of early 2000s throwback of whale tales, baggy jeans and cargo pants, past the more slouchy mesh tops of beige and oversize on oversize styles – there has been a fresh wave of more classic styles coming back to this generation.

Say hello to ‘Old Money‘ Style!

This trend went viral when Sofia Richie released pictures of her stunning wedding in France. From the venue to the fashion, the entire style of the wedding oozed this more classic, old school opulence.

Sofia Richie’s style is such a beautiful evolution from party girl (with her then boyfriend Scott Disick), to her style now, being married like royalty and stepping into her grown woman main-character chapter.

I hope in one of her future interviews someone asks her what shifted in her to cause this fresh change of mature elegance.

(Is Dua Lipa next in line for this chapter too?)

Sofia’s style was quickly compared to the style “Old Money” and with good reason.

What is the style ‘Old Money‘ and where did it come from?

‘Old money’ refers to people who have inherited significant generational wealth; their families have been wealthy for several generations. In the past, old money would have referred to an elite class: the aristocracy or landed gentry.

This lifestyle can be traced all the way back to the often obscure yet notorious lives of the wealthy and ultra-wealthy as captured in the 1920s – (The Great Gatsby & Brideshead Revisited is a perfect example).

To me ‘old wealth’ is a semi-whimsical yet simplistic world of the ultra wealthy – a place were money can buy almost anything one wants – creating a reality of pristine leisure – where ones time is filled with car collecting, equestrian clubs, multiple estates, generational wealth, galas, and social drama.

The icons who perfectly exemplify the fashion and class of ‘Old Money’ are the following – Grace Kelly Queen of Monaco, Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana, Cindy Crawford, Brooke Shields, Claudia Schiffer, and Carolyn Besset Kennedy to name a few.

How to Style Like “Old Money”

What are the key style traits to dressing like “Old Money”?

Simplicity.

Commonly, (not all the time) the wealthy tend to live under society’s radar on most of their outings. Not many people care to be under public scrutiny 24/7.

The natural choices in styles have been all about very high quality, classic, and straightforward styles.

Style staples include: a crisp white and/or black button up shirt, polo shirts, black/white/or navy suit jackets, dress pants, trench coats, business pumps, black or brown loafers, black/or white fitted evening dresses, black nylons (made popular by Princess Diana), simple gold earrings, designer watches, designer leather purses etc and a signature high quality perfume.

These staple looks can be used and styled time and time again, they ALWAYS come back in style making them great investments.

With the 90s came the true compilation of what would be forever seen as “Old Money” fashion.

I think Ralph Lauren triumphed this style during the 90s with his insanely amazing looks and perfectly styled ad campaigns. Lauren did not simply capture the style of the wealthy, but he captured and stylized their lifestyles as well.

Modern Old Money Styles

For modern celebs Rosie Huntington-Whitley Statham, Hailey Bieber, and Nicole Peltz are fresh examples of modern ‘old money’ styling.

What do these women have in common?

They are confident in their womanhood and, after tons of experimenting with styles, have stepped into their mature next season selves of classy wives, mothers, and businesswomen.

What season of life are you in?

Belen MusingsClosing thoughts: I personally hope that this style has an extended stay in the mainstream world – I don’t know about you but I am loving the idea of stepping into a new era of classy fashion.

In my musings I think it is society unconsciously reaching out for some balance and order, a maturing if you will now that the wheel of extreme influencer fashion has been reaching its peak.

What do you think?
