Fashion Highlights of 2022: The Good and the Bad

Hello fab friends!

After an insanely amazing long hiatus I am back fresh and ready to take on this new, exciting year of FASHION!

So much happened in the fashion world last year I just want to highlight some of my favorite moments, and some of my least favorite.

In this post I will also be showing some styles that I think should absolutely stay out of this new year.

Bella Hadid and the Spray Painted Dress

The finale of Coperni Spring Fashion show in Paris is a moment that no one will ever forget. It left chills and electrified viewers and critiques alike as we all bore witness to a glimpse of fashion’s future. This final is the topper of an outstanding year for the newly awarded ‘Best Model of the Year’ Bella Hadid. The innovative technology behind Hadid’s Coperni dress was created by Manel Torres (a Spanish fashion designer turned scientist). Torres has been nicknamed “The Chemist Tailor” because of the liquid material used (known as Fabrican). The liquid tissue made up of polymers, additives, and fiber that turns into a solid non-woven material when it comes into contact with air. That’s why Fabrican can come out of a spray can to instantly create something like Bella’s Coperni dress. (It can also be used to create protective coverings for furniture or car interiors).

The future of fashion is official now.

Blake Lively Statue of Liberty Atelier Versace Gown for the Met

Personally, I think she nailed it. In fact, I kinda think she was among the only few Met attendees who did nail the theme. (anyone else still wondering why so many of the other attendees didn’t read the theme?)

Blake Lively truly delivered (per usual, at this point) for the 2022 Met Gala. The Theme – “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”. Lively wore Atelier Versace, the design inspired by city of New York and the Statue of Liberty. The gown did not just make a jaw dropping appearance – but then transformed into almost an entirely different look as the train came down, and the gloves got replaced, morphing into the Statue of Liberty’s iconic blueish-green color. I think we all were Ryan Reynolds when we saw this happen.

Valentino Pink Fashion Show & the official launch Barbie(core)

HELLO PINK

Pink DOMINATED fashion this past year. Maison Valentino loved the color so much, that the fashion house dedicated the entire Fall/Winter ’22 collection to it. While the style “Barbicore” started swirling in the realms of social media a while ago, Valentino quickly jumped on the pink train – All in perfect time to the new Barbie movie (that is set to be released July 23rd of this year). Would this be social media imitating vintage, imitating art, imitating fashion? All I can say is, get ready for a very VERY pink Barbie fashion year.

Miu Miu – The return of Micro Mini Skirts and the Continual Slow Death of Originality

Miu Miu had quite the Spring/Summer ’22 collection this past year – causing a whirl of interest and (of course) memes, careening through the socials.

This is definitely on my list of most ridiculous fashion moments of last year. Is this what fashion has become? Is this pathetic relapse of a by gone era of eating disorders, flat asses, and constantly tugging down hems really making another appearance? I think this is a new low for fashion being even more honest. It only emphasizes how fashion has become a shell of itself as it gets constantly abused by “influencers” and then trickled down to the majority populous where the hideous cycle continues, going back up to “inspire” fashion houses. Based on this collection, one can see how Miu Miu can no longer design, but only reuse.

One can literally go to a local thrift store and make their own version of this fashion collection – you just need $10 bucks and some scissors. I can not tell what is more laughable – the design of this mini skirt, or the price tag on it? It’s only $2,000 to be trendy…I guess.

Rihanna’s Maternity Fashion

Rihanna is killing it. Period. This incredible woman is not only a self made BILLIONAIRE, but of course a world famous singer, and of course fashion risk taker. With the official announcement of her pregnancy, she wasted no time showcasing her maternity fashion – which actually wasn’t any maternity fashion. Rihanna made the point of not changing any of her personal style with her adjusting body, but opted to continue on the fashion program of dressing as herself. Wishing the biggest congratulations to Rihanna and her boyfriend ASAP Rocky with the arrival of their beautiful baby boy.

Julia Fox DIY Fashion – Her Powerful Point

2022 was quite the year for Julia Fox. The actress, fashion designer, model, photographer, painter, author, and dominatrix, hit the viral ground running by being seen as Kanye West date in New York. Since then she only pushed the pedal of notoriety by showcasing her personal fashion. While mostly wearing designer brands, she has been busy creating a style of her own. One of which, and not limited to, DIY fashion. Fox posted a TikTok of her creating a chic top and mini skirt out of a single Hanes tank top, she then added latex thigh-high boots and gloves.

Personally, I think she’s brilliant. This woman can clearly see the game of fame and knows exactly what to do and how to play for maximum publicity. It is no wonder that she dated Kanye (yes, I know he is a very troubled man) – I can only imagine the fascinating conversations they had however. One can imagine they looked at each other and said “Watch this”. They both give me the impression that they are among those who clearly see where society is, and knows exactly how to still bring that shock factor. And that is saying a lot in this day and age of social media.

Fascinating indeed.

Kim Kardashian in the Marilyn Monroe Dress for the Met

I have a few mixed feelings about this one. Kim Kardashian broke the internet (again, I guess?) when she stepped out on the red carpet for the 2022 Met Gala, wearing none other than the famous Marilyn Monroe dress the Hollywood icon wore to John F. Kennedy’s birthday party.

For me, seeing Kim Kardashian in this dress (designed by Bob Mackie) I felt more perturbed than in awe. I felt perturbed that Kim, who is famous for being famous (let’s be real, that is the brass tacks of it), would somehow be deemed up to par enough to wear the dress of the most famous Hollywood icon ever – an icon that EVERYONE seems to still be trying to make money off of, all under the guise of “paying homage”.

Alas, it happened, she wore the dress, it went viral, everyone talked about it, and thus continues the endless propulsion of this modern society denotation of fame by distraction…

What were your favorite fashion moments? What were your least favorite moments?
